Western Province Tennis has been tracking player performance over the Mixed League season.

The doubles ranking is calculated by comparing the average rating of a player & partner to that of the average rating of the opposition & partner. Points are gained or lost depending on the outcome and the difference in the two average ratings. As the player ‘experience’ grows the number of points earned/lost becomes less making the rating more stable.

A player should play at least 4 matches before the rating is representative.

There are two ratings: a MIXED rating (man & lady) and a DOUBLES rating (man & man and lady & lady)

To start with players are given a nominal rating associated with the league in which he/she played their first. The rating ranges from 1550 (5th) to 2050 (1st). Thereafter the rating of each player is modified by the outcome of matches against oppositions of different strengths.

If the player plays in different leagues his/her cumulative last rating is used. It can be beneficial to play in a higher league (=higher rating opposition) because a win will gain many points, but not lose so many on a loss. The opposite applies if the player moves down.
