Oldies but Goldies

The latest WP Vets Open was held on 28-30 May 2010 at Rondebosch and Kelvin Grove. It was well supported with most top players from Boland and WP present. Mark Pereth and Roland Matzke donned their Edgemead gear and managed to win the backdraw of the Men’s Doubles 50+ after a shaky start against higher ranked opposition: 4-6,6-2,6-2.

Veteran Tennis

Although Edgemead Tennis Club is largely composed of younger players, and a lot of emphasis is naturally placed on junior tennis, a few of its "more mature" members enjoy playing the Vets circuit.

Anybody over 30 can be classed as a veteran and enter tournaments in the age groups 30-35, 36-40, 41-45 46-50, 51-55, 56-60, 61-65, 66-70, 71-75 and 75+.

The tournaments are great fun and most of them are well supported. The SWD tournament held annually in George in December is probably the best one and very well organised with players combining their holidays with some tennis. Last year saw an entry of about 160 players from all over SA.

The level of tennis is quite high with most players on a par with WP's 3rd mixed league and upwards. So, not too many easy matches !

Roland Matzke has been playing the circuit for some years now, and his doubles partner Mark Pereth has joined recently. It would be nice if some more Edgemead players would consider entering tournaments. It can be lonely out there !

One has to belong to the SA Vets Tennis Association (SAVTA) to enter tournaments (R180 pa). For this you also receive the quarterly SA Tennis magazine free. Tournament fees are R195 per event which allows you to enter singles, doubles and mixed doubles. You can certainly get a lot of match play if you want.

There is also a ranking system per age group which can be downloaded here (Opens in a new window). The Vets 2010 calendar can be downloaded here (Opens in a new window).
